Standard 4: Instructional Strategies
A teacher must understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage student development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
Reflection:
Students need to show that they understand the information rather than just knowing the facts. It is the teacher's responsibility to provide multiple levels of comprehension for the students to gain the skills necessary to articulate their knowledge.
TPCK and Spreadsheet Graphic

I have developed a spreadsheet lesson that provided a variety of clear, accurate presentations and representations by comparing the various graphing concepts of spread sheets and a Venn diagram. Using these two techniques will present a varied perspective to encourage critical thinking. I also created a graphic for What is TPCK which represent how I can use graphics that will assist students' understanding.
Service Learning
During spring semester of 2010, I completed the course Service Learning Instruction. I implemented what I learned from this class with my second and third grade group at Discovery Club. My students researched project options, narrowed down their choices, and then voted on which cause to support. At the successful completion of a project, the students share with the rest of the Discovery kids what they learned and how they will do their next project differently.
I have been the facilitator of many service learning projects over the past five years. A service learning project is a project of service that has been developed by the students with the facilitator providing appropriate academic activities to build academic and socio-emotional skills. For example, my students have mailed school supplies to Iraqi students, earned money for the Ramsey County Humane Society, and collected cans to earn money to donate to a homeless shelter.
